Stargate Universe (often abbreviated as SGU) is a military science fiction drama television series and part of MGM's Stargate franchise. It follows the adventures of a present-day, multinational exploration team traveling on the Ancient spaceship Destiny several billion light years distant from the Milky Way Galaxy. They are now trying to figure out a way to return to Earth, while simultaneously trying to explore and to survive in their unknown area of the universe. The series, created by Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, premiered in the United States on Syfy on October 2, 2009. The series featured an ensemble cast and was primarily filmed in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. A second season of 20 episodes was announced by Syfy in December 2009.[1]
SGU Stargate Universe
Stargate Universe is set on the spaceship Destiny, which was launched by the race known as the Ancients from the Milky Way galaxy several million years ago.[51] Several ships were sent ahead of it to seed the universe with Stargates. The Ancients had planned on using the Stargate aboard Destiny to board that ship when it was far enough out into the universe, but they eventually abandoned the project after looking into ascension and other endeavors. To reach this ship, an address would have to be dialed consisting of nine chevrons, a possibility that had been unknown in the previous Stargate series, due to energy constraints and the lack of any nine-chevron addresses recorded anywhere until Destiny's address was discovered in Atlantis' database.[26]
After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers from Earth's Icarus base become stranded on an unmanned spaceship called Destiny - launched by the Ancients millions of years ago as part of a grand experiment to explore the universe, set in motion but never completed. The crew of the ship thus travels through the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, in the hope of finding a way home.
Additionally, at the beginning of season two, a new plot element was introduced. After unlocking full control of Destiny in the episode "Aftermath," the crew discovered the underlying reason for Destiny's construction. In addition to exploring the universe, the ship was also intended to collect information and piece together fragments of a complex message that the Ancients had found embedded in the fabric of the universe itself. Recognizing that the pattern could not have been natural in origin, the Ancients concluded that its presence suggested an order to the universe never thought possible. The result of this insight by the crew was the fact that Destiny actually has a mission so important that it overshadows the desire for them to get home, and that by pursuing onwards toward the ship's ultimate destination, it may, in fact, allow them to get home.
SGU is a much more stand-alone series than previous Stargate spinoffs. Whereas Stargate Atlantis contained several episodes that were directly intertwined with Stargate SG-1 (and vice versa), on only a few occasions have the affairs of the Milky Way and Earth been directly involved in the plot of an episode. This serves to further echo the aspect that Destiny's crew is on the far side of the universe where they have to fend for themselves.

Not long after the creation of the Stargates, the Ancients discovered a pattern in the Cosmic microwave background radiation; recognizing that the pattern could not have been natural in origin, the Ancients concluded that its presence suggested an order to the universe never thought possible, possibly some kind of message. However, the message was fragmented and could not be recovered. To that end, they devoted the efforts of an entire generation to the construction of Destiny, the purpose of which was to find and reassemble the fragments, completing the message. This was a competing project with City-Ships which had the same mission as Destiny and were in the early design stage of construction when Destiny was launched. [3] Automated ships were sent ahead of Destiny to explore the universe, seeding Stargates along their path.
The Stargate aboard the Destiny is a different, older design from the Stargates seen in the Milky Way and Pegasus galaxies. According to Dr. Nicholas Rush, the Stargate aboard Destiny is among the first of the Stargates ever created. Furthermore, the Stargate aboard the Destiny is the same design as those constructed and distributed by Seed ships across the universe, being slightly smaller than its successors. (SGU: "Air, Part 3")
Destiny's Stargate has the unique feature of being the only known gate with a unique nine-chevron "address" to access it from outside it's normal range, an address that is later determined to be a code by Eli Wallace and Nicholas Rush that can establish a connection from anywhere in the universe. However, unlike a traditional address, the point-of-origin is always Earth's, regardless of where the dialing gate is located. When, and only when, the ship receives a nine-chevron connection, the ship is forced to exit FTL in order for the connection to be established. In any other case, a normal seven-chevron connection will not disrupt Destiny's FTL drive and instead the ship will not appear on the list of prospective addresses that are in the proximity of a given terrestrial gate. (SGU: "Air, Part 1", "Lost", "Incursion, Part 1")
Stargate Universe also ended on a cliffhanger, with the crew's damaged ship needing to jump to a new universe. The team goes into stasis for the long journey, except for Eli, who has to stay awake since his pod is broken. He has two weeks to fix it before the life support systems shut down, and the finale ends with Eli staring out into space, his future uncertain.
First I wont to say how much I enjoy reading your blog and how much I have enjoyed all three show SG-1,SGA, and SGU I have to say I like SGU the best and was really upset when I hear it was candled. I really hope we will see more of the Stargate universe in the future. I did have a question for you did you are the other ever think of the dimities of the Destiny how big it was?
if we gathered fans to donate money and started a project on kickstarter.com for you guys to be able to continue some form of production on the stargate canon (whether it be a movie or a comic book or webisodes or what have you)
okay not reading all those spoilers I didnt see gauntlet yet. But I think I have an idea for how it ends you guys kinda set it up earlier and if im right it would be the best way to end it. Whats weird for me is how the ending of stargate coincides with my graduation, its like the universe telling me to grow up. Too many changes in one year in my opinion.
Joe why is it whenever anybody talks about a possible future for the stargate franchise you say I will not happen is this because most everyone has moved on to other projects or is there something your not allowed to talk about look at startrek it was cancelled numerous time and brought back sg just needs a brake
On another note, do you think it is impossible that there will ever be another sg1, atlantis, or universe dvd movie? Has the studio closed the door on those 3 shows for good or is it more of a not now? I realize that it has become very unlikely given that the sets have come down, just wondering if they have categorically ruled out picking up one of these a couple years down the road and decided that any future potential stargate will be completely different. 2ff7e9595c
